Our
Canton dental practice, at Cavalier Family Dental, is a wonderful place for the entire family to get comprehensive dental treatment. Our specialties are family and cosmetic dentistry, and we stress prevention as the first step toward a beautiful smile. Many patients come to us with a gum condition called gingivitis. Gingivitis is a precursor to gum disease, and should be treated as soon as it is diagnosed. A serious case of gum disease, if left untreated, will eventually lead to painful tooth infections, and even cause tooth and bone loss.
At our
Canton dental practice at Cavalier Dental, patients learn that the signs of gingivitis may include: inflamed and swollen gums; bright red or purple-colored gums; gums that are painful to the touch; gums bleeding during the day, or after brushing or flossing; and bad breath. A dentist will notice that in some patients the gums will take on a shiny appearance as the gums are stretched over the underlying tissue. At this point, gums will easily bleed. So if you notice blood after brushing or flossing, you should be sure to visit us at Cavalier Family Dental so you can be treated for gingivitis. Risk factors for gingivitis may include: avoidance of regular dental care; poor brushing and flossing habits; smoking; and some genetic factors. However, gingivitis can occur without any of these risk factors coming into play.
At our
Canton dental practice, you can be comfortably treated for gingivitis. Treatment is easy. However, following treatment you will need to be dedicated to following your at-home dental cleaning regimen. When you have gingivitis, you will receive a comprehensive professional dental cleaning at our office. Depending on how far the gingivitis has advanced, you may be asked to come in for repeated cleaning in as little as 2, or up to 6 months down the road. During the in-office cleaning, plaque and hardened tartar will be removed from your teeth with professional dental cleaning tools. This type of hardened material cannot be removed by at-home brushing or flossing, so you really need to visit your dentist to have this done. The aim of the treatment is to reduce oral bacteria, which can get into your gums and create serious damage. Your professional cleaning may also include scaling, root planing, and the use of anti-bacterial mouth washes. When you come in for a professional tooth cleaning due to gingivitis, you will also receive training on proper brushing and flossing techniques to keep your teeth clean and healthy, and as bacteria-free as possible.
